Garage door rules in Strafford County, New Hampshire

Strafford County follows New Hampshire state licensing law, and the county or its cities issue the building permit for the job. Below: the state rule, the places inside the county, and live local coverage.

Licensing in New Hampshire

New Hampshire does not license contractors at all - the state's own Attorney General says so - so garage door work is governed only by the state building code and local permitting.

Licensing authority
No state contractor licensing board. Home-improvement contractor conduct is handled by the New Hampshire Department of Justice, Consumer Protection and Antitrust Bureau (hotline 1-888-468-4454). — official site
State licence required?
No state contractor licence. The NH Attorney General's own consumer alert states plainly: "In New Hampshire, contractors do not need to be licensed, and fraudsters may represent themselves to be reputable contractors in order to take homeowners' money." The AG advises consumers to ask each contractor for proof of insurance and to always have a written contract with a detailed scope of work, materials, total price and payment schedule before any work or payment. Note that NH does separately license some trades (e.g. electricians, plumbers/gas fitters) through the Office of Professional Licensure and Certification - garage door installation is not among them.
Permit for a garage door
Permits are issued locally under the New Hampshire State Building Code (RSA 155-A). RSA 155-A:1 defines the state building code as adopting by reference the International Building Code 2021, International Existing Building Code 2021, International Plumbing Code 2021, International Mechanical Code 2021, International Energy Conservation Code 2018, International Swimming Pool and Spa Code 2021, International Residential Code 2021 (all published by the International Code Council) and the National Electrical Code 2023, together with all amendments reviewed and approved by the State Building Code Review Board as of April 11, 2025 and ratified by the legislature.
